At university you are given a list of books to read and they are only for starters. The books are written by different people and the sum total of all their knowledge will make you a much wiser person.
So it is with the Gospels. Matthew, Luke, and John between them give a comprehensive account of Christ’s last hours. You have heard of the harmony of the Gospels and combining all three accounts gives us with the full picture.
"Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour when Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Some of those that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elijah. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. and gave him to drink.
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: then crying again with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, yielded up the ghost."
Matthew 27:45, Luke 23:44, John 19:28.
